HEALTH SERVICES UNDER THREAT FROM  OBESITY - WHO REPORT

OBESITY - PREVENTING AND MANAGING THE GLOBAL EPIDEMIC
WHO Report of a Consultation on Obesity Geneva 3-5 June 1997

The medical burden of obesity threatens to overwhelm health services, warns a new WHO report.

New preventive public health measures should be aimed at wider  cross-sections of societies around the world rather than concentrating on those already affected, the report adds.

The 276-page document is a major step forward in recognizing the global epidemic of obesity.  Issued in early summer, the limited distribution report was the result of a wide-ranging consultation with experts in the field of obesity.

The three-day consultation was arranged with the support of the International Obesity Task Force in Geneva last year to deliver evidence of the escalating problem of obesity and to establish a scientific consensus on the need for urgent action.

A further WHO Technical Report Series document on obesity is expected to be published before the end of the year.
