The three Italian National Health Surveys carried out in adults aged 15+yrs showed that obesity rates are relatively low compared to the rest of Europe and apparently fell slightly since 1983 although other studies suggest higher levels..

Sample sizes were 72 284 (1983), 50682 (1990/1), and 13 084 (1994).

Also, note that data from the 1991 EROS (Emilia Romagna Obesity Study) study in NW Italy suggest higher rates: 12% (men), 14% (women)
