Launch of first academic journal devoted to pediatric obesity

Stockholm, Sweden – March 9, 2006.

IASO is launching the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, a first-of-its-kind peer-reviewed academic journal that looks exclusively at the issue of obesity in children and adolescents.

One out of every ten children in the world is overweight or obese. And, as obesity rates are on the rise in much of the Americas, Europe, and more recently, China and India, so are the rates of serious health illnesses associated with it, including obstructive sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease, orthopaedic complications, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and diabetes (type 2 and pre-diabetes).

The International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, published for IASO by Taylor and Francis, analyzes the increasing rates of obesity in children and adolescents on a global level and attempts to address many of the important issues associated with this growing epidemic, including:

According to Professor Louise Baur, Editor-in-Chief of the journal, “what distinguishes this journal from other journals in the field is that it is the first to solely concentrate upon the problem of pediatric obesity.” It will act as a forum for clinicians, public health researchers, basic scientists, sociologists, policy makers and other specialists in the area of health and nutrition to present high quality research on important topics dealing with pediatric obesity.

The journal will be multi-disciplinary in nature and will cover a variety of topics, including:

The International Journal of Pediatric Obesity is owned by the International Association for the Study of Obesity, a charitable body linking over 50 regional and national associations with over 10,000 professional members in scientific, medical and research organisations. The Journal will be available in both print and online versions and the first issue will be published in March 2006.
